Some people may have wondered where I've been in the last couple of
days. The answer is that I've been taking a short break from afp,
partly because I've been doing some Wikipedia editing [1] and there
aren't enough hours in the day for that and Usenet. I'll be back soon.

Adrian.

[1] I won't mention my username here, but I will probably tell you
what it is if you ask me in email. Some of you already know.

While you're down there, please have a look at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limerence

which smacks of utter bullshit to me, but I don't feel qualified enough to
object to it with a decent amount of venom.

On a quick glance, I see nothing particularly wrong with the article.
What do you object to?

Adrian.

It's a recognised phenomenon, I've seen the term used in discussion before
and it neatly sums up a state I'd otherwise have difficulty describing.
What's the problem?

"My religion says so" explains your beliefs. But it doesn't explain
why I should hold them as well, let alone be restricted by them.

They did manage to take ALL the passion out of the topic, didn't they?

'Limerent Object' -- sounds like a Culture GCU to me...

Cheers,

Matthew

I do not have either the competence or the desire to dissect the topic
under discussion in an academic manner. However, I must protest quite
vehemently against the (even semi-) existence of a word that was made up
just because it sounds right, and which intentionally has no etymology
(an aberration in its own right), but which looks like it should be
derived from a Latin word for "the creation of borders" - an association
particularly unsuited to the concept the word is purported to denote.

OK, I think I'll be concentrating on afp now.

Don't believe anyone who tells you that the main problem with
Wikipedia is that whatever you change, improve, correct gets promptly
changed back. Most of the time, it doesn't. On the contrary, a more
vexing problem is the loneliness of editing articles that people
hardly ever touch.

Also, Wikipedia is in the middle of a civil war at the moment. It's
like a big metathread, in stalemate. I got slightly involved and tried
to make some constructive contributions, but bored now. It's not that
I care, up to a point, which side wins: my take on it is that the
biggest problem is the failure to reach a resolution at all, rather
than the possibility of reaching the "wrong" one.

I made a slightly cheeky edit yesterday, but I'm loathe to mention
what it is, lest some humourless git change it back who wouldn't have
known about it had I not mentioned it here. It's harmless.

A spammer has recently discovered my private email address and has
been sending me messages. My private email address hardly ever gets
spam.

My microwave has been fixed. Picked it up this morning. Haven't
actually tested it yet, though.

Adrian.
